Seems to me he's being hung, drawn and quartered by Abbott before there's any sort of judicial inquiry. The real 'joke' is that Turnbull was up for the same 'offence' but was allowed to keep working while it was sorted out!! Hypocrisy at its worst.

" Can this possibly be true"......reg: Horsemeat?.
« on: July 14, 2010, 11:10:56 PM »

 ??? ??? ???

On Radio National today, they stated, that W.A. is allowing the "temporary sale" of horse-meat.
In one nominated Butchers Shop:in Perth.

{ on a trial basis only}.

Mainly because, Australia already processes, 40,00 horses, for "export", per annum.
To France, Belgium: Northern Italy and Asia.
Altho ,we have such a great "Export" trade in horse-meat....
it is not encouraged here, at home.

Could you face a horse....Kebab?.
it is quite an emotional decision, isn't it?.
To be absolutely honest......I am not mentally ready for horse steaks.

In memory of all my long departed "nags".....I shall stick to my Cauliflower au Gratin: with Pasta Strips.
 :'( :'( :'(...bewildered.

I don't see the difference between eating horse compared to cow. It's all meat, it all requires an animal to die.

Kangaroo Is delicious and it's a national icon.

Never will I be eating:

. Horses
. Pigs
. Dogs
. Monkeys
. Bugs
. Worms
. Camels
. Snakes
. Kangaroos
. Any animal with a paw.

But that's just me.

Jack Russells, or bigger dogs, as takeaway?...as in Asia?

No thank you!

Dog meat will likely be the next 'delicacy' demanded to be sold here as our culture is crushed under the wheels of the multicultural bus.

China...animal cruelty capital of the world: ...Korea, Vietnam, and others too.

Pity the dogs don't eat China and others for dinner!

Logic tells me you're right.  But I can't emotionally accept it fully.
Above all, though, I can't accept the terrible cruelty in the lead up to the slaughter.

I don't think I could eat horse, even though I have never owned one...I think about Monica Dickens...

What meat we eat is relative...

More important to me is

Are they being killed humanely?
Are they being farmed, or are they in huge supply?

I don't like the idea of eating our coat of arms... but I understand that roos are in plague proportions, and would like to think that we would curb culling/hunting rules before we were in the same position as America with their Bald Eagle.

There is also the fact that they have a much smaller carbon footprint compared to cattle and their paws cause less errosion than hooves.

I knew this was going to go back to the Jack Russle disscussion...

Wouldn't it be better to eat kangaroo's in the first place rather than manipulate cows into performing like kangaroos through food additives and other forms of manipulation?

Kangaroos are in plague proportions and are being culled and their bodies are being put to waste. Makes much more sense to eat the plague proportions of kangaroos than over-breeding cows. Two birds with one stone.

Also, while the newspaper article you have posted shows that the beef industry is looking into the reduction of methane emissions it doesn't solve the erosion problem due to their hooves.

Kangaroo is also much MUCH healthier for you. Higher levels of iron and protein and much less fat.

I don't trust the beef industry a great deal, they are similar to the mining industry, everyone is in their pockets. They even had a hand in the construction of the food pyramid (If anyone saw the video I posted a while ago about what's wrong with what we eat you will know what I'm talking about...).

The obvious problem is in farming Roos is the buggers wont stay where you put them so someone who bears the expense of raising them to a commercial age has no guarantee that they wont run to the guy down the road and get harvested there.
Agreed Many go to waste for various reasons and there is much that could be done to change that. For example my brother and I shot over 600 feral goats last year and most of those stayed where they were shot for a number of reasons mostly access to the carcass's and the property owners fear of people knowing he has the goats and not being able to control poachers.

Diseases in Kangaroo Meat

Kangaroos and wallabies can harbour a wide range of parasitic, bacterial, fungal and viral diseases and the majority of infections are unapparent (i.e. animals appear normal). Even meat inspection procedures are unlikely to detect some infections unless gross lesions are detected or routine samples are taken for microbiological and pathological testing.

It said they harbour them it didnt mention anything about them being harmful to humans did it?
Most mammals carry some parasitic burden and like pigs it can be managed if you want to bother.

It did:

Worldwide, it is recognised that so-called ‘game meats’ are a source of these infections for hunters, processors and consumers, especially when care is not taken while eviscerating and handling the carcasses or when the meat from these animals is served undercooked or raw. Trichinosis, cysticercosis and toxoplasmosis are examples of parasitic zoonoses (i.e. diseases transmissible from animals to humans).

In Australia, Toxoplasmosis and the bacterial disease, Salmonellosis are two infections with public health significance directly related to the handling, processing and consumption of kangaroo meat. The October issue of Womans’ Day (1995) reported that a food-borne outbreak of toxoplasmosis caused acute clinical illnesses in 12 humans and one case of congenital chorio-retinitis (inflammation of the eye tissues) in a new born baby. The mother of the affected baby together with the 12 other people had attended a Christmas function at which rare kangaroo medallions were served. A thorough epidemiological investigation concluded that the most likely ‘risk food’ was the kangaroo meat.

Even ‘new’ human diseases have been shown to have origins in Australian game meat. In 1993 the first confirmed human case of Pseudotrichinosis was diagnosed. The medical investigators concluded that the patient became infected in Tasmania through eating meat, most probably derived from a wild animal. Subsequent research conducted at the University of Tasmania showed that about 2% of Tasmanians surveyed had antibodies to this muscle-encysting nematode.
