Seems to me he's being hung, drawn and quartered by Abbott before there's any sort of judicial inquiry. The real 'joke' is that Turnbull was up for the same 'offence' but was allowed to keep working while it was sorted out!! Hypocrisy at its worst.

Yes when I said saving the planet what I really meant was saving mankind. Earth will still be around for a long time but we might not be!

We touched on it yes... And I agree with you, it is impractical.

Currently Kangaroo is produced only from free ranging wild animals living on land owned by people and not produced by organised farming.

This paper says it's not feasible from an economical viewpoint: http://www.publish.csiro.au/paper/RJ9830035.htm

As for fences... Build bigger ones? If you can keep Mongolians out of china surely you can keep Roo's in a paddock...

I dunno... it might be impractical, both physically and financially farming Kangaroos but it's also impractical having a huge hole in the ozone layer over our country...

At the very least we should eat the ones we are forced to cull...

I think you will find that trying to farm Roos will create enormous problems with breed specific parasites like worms.Nematodes etc. Like most free ranging wild animals they naturally keep the burden of these things down by constantly being on the moove allowing them to stay away from their own feces and to not drink from the same water sources all the time. Fencing them in will cause the sorts of problems we have with having to worm horses every few weeks only given that horses have been domesticated for thousands of years, Roos may well be far worse without the freedom of running wild.
You dont have to take my word for it but I seriously dont think it is practical.
As for the fences I have to assume your knowledge of fencing is a little limited as is your understanding of farm economics RE: the cost of such a fence, its ecpected lifespan and the rendering of it being useless bu the damaged caused by animals like Pigs Wombats and neighboring cattle.

Yes my understanding of both of those areas is next to none.

I dunno, to me it's a matter of weighing up economic viability and global warming etc.

I would rather have a more expensive manufacturing process than a more dangerous one. I know... nobody else thinks like that and there's my problem :)

I dont know if I would disagree with that I would always rather the most efficient method possible and that always contains an element of sustainability.
Though tha does not mean we would necessarily agree on what that constitutes I'm sure.

I am totally ignorant when it comes to these sorts of discussions (even thou I'm a farmers daughter LOL) ... so you are saying that by  "penning" (for want of a better description) these animals ie roos you are more likely to have problems ie worms etc... I would have thought that if you for example had a roo farm you'd go through all the normal vet practises ie worming medication etc ...not sure how you'd administer the like though... PP  ::) ::) ::) ::)
Tai Chi - Mind, body and spirit are all exercised simultaneously.  The continuous flowing movements of Tai Chi are based on the principle that running water never stagnates.  The gentle movements relax your muscles and joints while strengthening your body and mind.

Call it an educated guess on my part but it stands to reason that if the captive populations of other mammalian herbivores suffer these problems it is only more likely to happen to animals that have evolved unrestrained in any way by man like the roo.
Trust me I have dosed and wormed about every domesticated animal I can think od from sheep  to horses and even a few Llama but I would expect Roos to be an order of magnitude more difficult and all that assuming that current vet practices and chemicals are appropriate for use on roos!
I can think of one way to do it but you would find it hard to get existing farmers to help.
Also dont underestimate the difference in dealing with attempting to farm an animal that is not and has never been domesticated.

I can understand what you are saying, really I can.

Yes, new research would have to be done and new handling procedures and a lot of trial and error. But in the long run wouldn't it be worth it?

Yes it is difficult now to change our ways but won't that be easier than repairing the environment in 100 years time?

I think there are more important things to take into consideration than how much bang you can get for your buck.

Well i dont have the same passion for removing cattle from the food chain as you I'm actually rather fond of them and frankly would never want to live anywhere that I couldnt see them on a daily basis and dam they smell good !
Like I said the problem is not that we eat cattle or drive cars or make books out of trees or burn coal for energy it is simpoly the rate at which we do it and that is directly proportional to population and with another 2 something billion people in india and china wanting to create their version of the American dream thats your problem right there.
The long term solution to all environmental and many social problems is reduced population!

Too True.

My problem isn't with cattle, it's with the number for them. In other words I don't think steak should ever be removed from the shelves, I just think that the abundance of It is the problem, especially considering there are better alternatives.

I also see the culling of animals and letting them go to waste while we are over producing cattle as absurd.

The problem lies with our lifestyle. There is this much meat because we have a demand for this much meat. If we fix our diets and our energy consumption and our laziness everything else would sort itself out...

The number of cattle is directionally proportional to the number of people. Funnily enough so is the number of cars, Ipods mud huts and Jumbo Jets. Its not what we do,how we do it but the rapidly growing 6000,000,000 population and their collective needs which cause the environmental impact.

Not always.

http://www.ted.com/talks/mark_bittman_on_what_s_wrong_with_what_we_eat.html

We eat way too much read meat. It's extreemly unhealthy for us in the quantities we eat it and it is leading us hand-in-hand to an early grave.

What about air-conditioning? People turn in on when it is hot not pausing to think that by doing so they are contributing to the rising temperatures.

Some people use dryers because they are too lazy to hang their washing outside.

It is what we do and how we do it and how frequently and how many of us there are doing it.
