They have $15billion of the stimulus money they haven't spent...they should be using that.

The annual federal budget is between $330 billion and $360 billion depending on who's talking.
They could find $5 billion if they tried hard enough.
Postpone the dumb NBN idea...there's the $5 billion flood funds.

I agree with Kady firstly get rid of the NBN Broadband Scheme which I think will probably be outdated before it even gets up & running (going on past schemes I have little faith in this Gov) ...that saving would then possibly pay for much of the replacement infrastructure....and yes as Alec said many who have already donated substantial money to the flood victims probably do feel like they are being hit twice......can I also add that I am a little over seeing the media focus being only on QLD flood victims......many other areas/States have also suffered granted the water may not have come with the same force but people have lost property/income etc elsewhere & shouldn't be forgotten in the media coverage ie Victoria are still going through flood traumas ....

Patricia, you are correct in everything that you have stated including the fact that it only seems like Queensland is the only place hit by floods. Yes, widespread there - but there are other places who apparently have fallen off the radar.

That reminds me, I must get on with doing my state income tax return. Oh wait, we don't pay state income tax in Australia! All tax revenue goes to the commonwealth (hence the name) which disburses it to the states. Do you think perhaps if the commonwealth is under the pump financially the states might get a little less to spend on health and education?

The claim made by the government's detractors was the the levy was not necessary, that the flood infrastrcture repairs could have been completed out of normal revenue.

But to do that, services would have to be cut. So which services? What are the services that government provides, and that our taxes pay for, and which are you prepared to go without in order to avoid paying the levy?
