my own site is getting 3 and more members a day and i find the only reason for joining is to get google etc to notice their site.
at first i wondered and then looked at their server.
eg 178 137 167 192 and followed by a sort of web address so when i checked the web address is on their server number and advertising porn and hand bags etc.
so they got deleted pronto.
it seems there is an automatic search and register bot
as it does not come up on my site meter
i noticed one of you recent members is just here to advertise their site
so do we let them in so they can spam at a later date or do we nip them in the bud now
hard decision but moderators can check their server and if it contains a web address in it then they could be a future spammer
my opinion if they done post in say a couple of days then they are not interested so delete them

We dont seem to get as many as we did Piersdad... used to be chromic, and time consuming... maybe (actually not maybe...definitely!!) Chris would be a better help on this one, so I will leave it to him!

got 5 last night from russia and iceland im sure they are interested in my site if they are genuine they will re apply

ps the last member on this forum seems a bit sus to me check their website and see what you think

Hmmm... had a look, I am not as clever at this as Chris (where is he btw?) but Derek hasn't broken any rules at this point. I'll watch, and given that this post is on an open board, it might be a nice chance for him to join in?

There are some issues, Jen -
Minx is in WA with me; I can't seem to log out so that she can log in on my computer. Minx has spoken to Chris and he will have a look in about an hour or so.

Piersdad is right; the website is sus - it's a forum which claims to have 105 members (some of whom are recognised drug spammers) and over 1800 posts, but only one post shows up on the index.

gopt about 12 today so far i go to stop forum spam and do a search if it at all looks genuine and most show up there or their ip addy has a reference to their site

but who from russia or iceland wants to read or contribute
except to get a free ride to the top of google search engine via my hard work
so some time i ban the ip adress or just delete them even when they are on line

finally got the buggers i went on admin and stopped all registrations an as well raised the age of consent fro 16 to 100
as i only get one new member a month if lucky then they will finally give up

For a while when we were getting dozens of registrations a day I moved the domain name server (DNS) to a company called 'Cloud Flare' who provide a free spammer stopping service. Within days the false registrations dropped to a minimum and even tho we've now gone back to the hosting services there are still no false registrations!!

It *does* carry a few 'issues' as they are often subject to DOS attacks from frustrated spammers, but otherwise the service works really well!

Might be worth checking out?? Have a look at http://cloudflare.com

thanks just checked my error page and usually there are 3 pages but now i have banned the bots i get as many as 50 pages of sorry you have been banned messages
so will check the link

I moved us to Cloudflare a few months back and within days the false rego's had dropped to almost zero. We're only back on the original host servers because of the recent hiccough but even so we've only had *two* people register who are a bit sus!!

The only 'iffy' thing about using Cloudflare is when you want to check a member's IP for some reason. Because *all* calls to the domain are made thru the Cloudflare servers, all members posts seem to originate from the same place!

It is possible to bypass the Cloudflare servers for specific purposes. For example, you access the Control Panel for the domain by typing 'direct' at the start of the url, i.e. if we were using Cloudflare currently, I'd type 'http://direct.australianopinion.com.au/cpanel' into the address bar and it would take me to the right place.

thanks for the help as my site is now mainly history
dont need more members. it helped a grand child to develop her skills in writing and has just published her first novel
so mainly friends and family now so registration can be done by personal email
