Seems to me he's being hung, drawn and quartered by Abbott before there's any sort of judicial inquiry. The real 'joke' is that Turnbull was up for the same 'offence' but was allowed to keep working while it was sorted out!! Hypocrisy at its worst.

Wandering by to say 'Hi'. Completely flat out at the moment, studying 2 courses and teaching 3, plus buying a townhouse on the Gold Coast for our big move in a few months. All the developments are good ones, though. Hope all's well with all here.

Mortein abandons Australia.
« on: February 04, 2012, 04:29:21 PM »
Reckitt Benckiser are closing down their last factory in Australia. This means popular brands like Mortein and Harpic will now be totally imported.

They also manufacture Dettol, Airwick and Aeroguard amongst other brands.

This is particularly hypocritical bearing in mind the major advertising campaign they have underway currently.

I will no longer be buying their top brands and if anyone can tell me other products they sell I'll boycott those as well!!

Don't know any more brands, but I'll be reading the labels of all products more closely from now on...the company name and country of manufacture will be on the labels.
There are similar products on the same shelves made here.

I just abandoned Mortein etc also.

I've been wandering thru the supermarkets ;looking at just how much is foreign made. I'm going to make a moreserious effort to buy goods that are not only 'Australian made' but made from Australian produce as well!!

What was the name of the website that listed the products known to be wholly produced in Australia?

Might be useful to go shopping with the PDA working!! I wouldn't mind paying a few dollars extra on housekeeping to keep jobs here.

I'll bet the wood *was* made in Australia... before being chopped, chipped and sent overseas! :(

Yesterday I checked by Dettol bottles, and Dettol liquid soap dispenser refills.

Small Dettol bottle label, probably about 8 months old:

It has the company's West Ryde NSW address, then underneath:

"Made in the UK from local and imported components"

Large Dettol bottle label, a few months old:

Exactly the same thing.

Liquid soap dispenser refills:

Spare one, [bought a few spare ones about 3 months ago]:

"Made in China from local and imported components"

I was just wondering...this can be read two ways... are the components local to Australia? Or China/UK? Are the imported items from a third country? It's a play on words that could easily mislead (I am wondering if the misleading is deliberate)

Hmmm...

It's deliberate. The idea is to confuse and obfuscate[1] so that you can never be sure exactly what it is you are getting or where form. Another nice one is 'Packed in Australia'... I want a site where we can go and check that what we buy *is* made from local products created Australian workers in Australia!

[1] Obfuscation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Obfuscation (or beclouding) is the hiding of intended meaning in communication, making communication confusing, wilfully ambiguous, and harder to interpret.

(nice word that... glad I got a chance to finally use it!!)

Buying Australian is great if you can afford it.  As most Australian products are much more expensive than their substitutes

In the long run tho it's more expensive *not* to buy Australian because profits go overseas and we end up paying more in taxes to support people on welfare because they have no jobs!
