Seems to me he's being hung, drawn and quartered by Abbott before there's any sort of judicial inquiry. The real 'joke' is that Turnbull was up for the same 'offence' but was allowed to keep working while it was sorted out!! Hypocrisy at its worst.

Wandering by to say 'Hi'. Completely flat out at the moment, studying 2 courses and teaching 3, plus buying a townhouse on the Gold Coast for our big move in a few months. All the developments are good ones, though. Hope all's well with all here.

Not quite what I had in mind
« on: November 05, 2009, 07:58:07 PM »
Sometimes Google cracks me up

I went and did a Google on Good News Stories

This is one of the things I found
Quote
March: Former vice-president Dick Cheney shoots himself in the foot hunting squirrels following a prayer breakfast in Hope, Florida.

Thought:
“There’s an entrenched bias in the news industry towards bad news, which has probably grown out of the adage that ”good news doesn’t sell”. Remember William Randolph Hearst: ”News is what someone, somewhere, doesn’t want printed,  all the rest is advertising”.

Good news is unpopular, we get dissatisfied with our own lot, or simply jealous.
Bad news IS popular, it makes us feel better, glad it wasn't us, and able to feel "sympathy", or in reality, superior. ::)

Bad news makes me feel worse, not better.

*

Probably was "hate Bush" media cheering as Cheney shot himself in the foot.

The chosen one and his disciples are being accused of trying to have Fox News et al 'silenced' and free speech stifled, as they don't like hearing what is being said.

Good news...videos have been discovered where happy [little] kids in schools are singing with joy in praise of the chosen one.

It helps foster our state of fear mentality. We have lived it for years.... the media and politicians have a lot to answer for... they want us to live in fear (to a point). It means we need them.

Recall on a trip to America just after 9/11 the televisions & radio all talked doom/gloom 24 hours a day (understandable to a point) & everyone seemed to be tuned into CNN ...again doom/gloom....commented at the time that I would hate to live in a country where you were constantly living in fear etc.....as I have always said....there is no place like Austraila (& especially living in the sticks......just for Bambu)  ::)

...for now.

NYC had just been blown up by terrorists! ...thousands dead, the Towers collapsed.
Planes had been hijacked, all the passengers murdered in fireballs as the planes were flown into the Towers and the Pentagon, [and crashed in a field], horrified people on the ground fleeing for their lives as the dust clouds swirled like hurricanes thru the streets.
Office workers sitting at their desks murdered, burnt to death, others on the higher floors having to jump to their deaths or be burnt alive.
"Doom and gloom"...perfectly reasonable fear.

No place like Australia?

...for now:

;D Human psychology:

Good news is unpopular, we get dissatisfied with our own lot, or simply jealous.
Bad news IS popular, it makes us feel better, glad it wasn't us, and able to feel "sympathy", or in reality, superior. ::)
What a sorry lot of selfish sods we are at heart!
 :D

When I was given responsibility for the Western Times (weekly newspaper South West Queensland) almost two years ago, the boss said "I want a community newspaper". So I looked at what the paper had been doing and made some fairly big changes.
As a weekly, we don't cover what I call "hard news" - the sort of stories you'd find on the front pages of the dailies. There're a couple of reasons for that:
  • our paper is printed in Toowoomba (700kms away), so I have to have the paper ready for typeset by Tuesday evening in order for it to get printed and then trucked out here for sale on Thursday. That means my copy deadline has to be Monday, then I lay the paper out on Tuesday. So if I do go with a hard news story, chances are by the time my paper hits the street, that story will have either changed or become 'old' news.
  • People out here get their hard news from dailies (Courier Mail, Brisbane & The Chronicle, Toowoomba), radio or TV news. I simply can't compete - don't have the resources. In any case, most of that hard news is at a state or national level.
On the other hand, the advantage I have is that I'm right here - in the community - and that's where I get my news from. Every story directly involves the south west or central west.
Another change I made is I don't chase ambulances - a car crash will never be on my front page. What will be (and has been) on the front page is a 'good' news story such as the opening of a new bridge that was built after many years of community pressure following a fatal accident.
Indeed, the front page is always good news or news that supports the community spirit. Any 'bad' news (and fortunately we don't get much out here) goes on page three. Police reports go on page four.
The overall emphasis of the paper is reporting on the 'good' things happening in our community - the things The Chronicle can't cover or isn't interested in covering. It's not a case of trying to hide what is 'bad' - it's merely a change in emphasis. When 'bad' things happen, they get coverage, but I've found people here do like good news stories. Our circulation is up and feedback is positive. It is now considered by most to be a community newspaper.

BB-" Bad news makes me feel worse, not better."

Mate, everything seems to make you feel worse!
Cheery little sod, aren't you?

Those who look for the ills of the world will never be disappointed. Those who seek the good will be often disappointed, but occasionally will know such joy, such a lightness of heart and spirit, that it makes the search worthwhile.
And in the mean-time will live far more pleasant lives.

It does seem that way sometimes doesn't it?

Kier, is the paper you are talking about the free one they throw over the fence? I think it's called The Toowoomba Mail? (I live there)

The community papers might be all about quilting and choirboys but at least you feel good after reading them.

The Brisbane one (MX) is pretty good too.
