I genuinely wonder if we are going backwards in evolution.
The latest monumental issue troubling our intellectual elite:
The name of an ice cream is offensive according this  fellow.

[quoteThere are calls to change the name of the renowned Golden Gaytime amid concerns it is offensive to Australia’s gay community.

Australian man, known only as Brian Mc, launched the petition online earlier in the month and has since gone to war with ice-cream giant Streets and its parent company Unilever.

The petition has gathered more than 800 signatures so far.

Mr Mc described the name of the ice cream, which was first released in 1959, as “outdated” and “offensive” and is calling for the term “gay” to be banished from its title.]
[/quote]
From todays Australian.
We've got floods ,, fires, wars etc going on, and the eternally offended lie awake night after night, looking for something else to belt us over the head with.  Trouble is...so many fall for it, and we end up with minorities telling us how to talk, think and act.

Technobabble / Using the YouTube icon.

Small point. Just above the 'post box' are a series of formatting options, each of course with it's own effect. The one that I wanted to point out was the 'YouTube' icon. Using it may seem pointless but it has a useful purpose in that if you *don't* use it and post a url to a YouTube video, it will take you to YouTube to play it, i.e. leave the AO site. However, if you 'wrap' the url inside the YouTube boxes created by the icon, the video will still play, but you won't leave the AO site. I've taken to doing this so if you go to the Entertainment forum you'll see how it works. For comparison, Kady made a post *without* the box, and I've made a couple with it.

Listening to Elgar's Enigma Variations (Nimrod, Pomp and Circumstance etc). What a powerful piece this is. My earliest memories of it are from the Remembrance Day services in November where serving members of the UK armed forces stand in the central area whilst music is playing and the symbolic poppy petals fall slowly from the ceiling covering them. I know the US traditionally uses the music for their graduation ceremonies but for me it still feels especially poignant because of it's association with the sacrifice of people who offer their lives to protect their country and the culture they believe is right. If there were more of us here I'd suggest a thread where we could list our favourite pieces from a variety of genres... but there's only me as a regular right now :D

Society / Unconscious or blind discrimination?

Despite all sorts of legislation in place to supposedly ensure people with mobility disabilities get a fair crack at a job, there is still a long way to go. Almost every day when I'm wandering around I see places with entranceways that would be impossible for anyone in a wheelchair, or even on crutches to negotiate!! The story below is a case in point. Excellent resume, positive feedback from potential employer and invitation to attend a final interview... then stymied because there is no ramp to enter the building, or lift to access the offices of the company.

Ok not all premises can be modified to suit, but surely there should be grants available to make as many premises as possible conform to acceptable standards? On a side note, why wasn't the person in the story informed by her potential employers that she might find access to the work premises difficult or impossible? Why did she have to arrive at the building in order to find out she wouldn't be able to go to the interview or actually attend the workplace?? This sort of thing drives me wild.

One of the best and worst things about Australia is the variety of wildlife. Spiders are amongst the most amazing and the most frightening of the smaller creatures we have. These things rank up there with the funnel webs and the huntsman as the scariest... tho, along with the huntsman, these aren't considered to be lethal tho their bite can be painful for a day or more. Luckily spiders this big aren't found down as far as Sydney, tho, with global warming, who really knows when they'll migrate in this direction?? :D

I've been a hoarder for longer than I can remember. I can demonstrate this with two examples, both tech based. They are receipts for our first even *real* computer, an Amstrad PCW 8256 bought in January 1986 for the princely sum of £478.75, and our *next* new computer, an Amstrad 1640 which costs us £1,780.20 back in 1988.

I have said many times if it wasn't for the old PCW I'd never have managed to complete my first degree but as a struggling student the price was a lot to carry but well worth it. The 1640 was more of a luxury purchase but we'd outgrown the capabilities of the PCW so was really a necessity. Even so, both were expensive investments. The cost of the 1640 *then* converts to over $3,000 in todays money... and that's without taking inflation into account!! :)

Society / Sistine Chapel under attack?
« Last post by Chris on March 14, 2021, 03:05:45 PM »
We've downsized, yet again, and moved into an even smaller house, so we've started sorting through the 'archives'. Anyway, whilst reading through some old papers I'd kept dating from 2010, I found an interesting article about the effect the thousands of human visitors were having on the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican. Seems the sheer volume of perspiration and dust shed by the visitors is taking it's toll on the murals etc. and the climate control systems were in dire need of an upgrade to cope with the mess. Just made me wonder if the problem was solved or is it an ongoing issue? After 11 years you'd hope it has been, but does anyone know the answer??

The link takes you to the original article if you might like to read it... :)

Great memories come flooding back, listening to old tunes like that.  It seemed a more simple time in so many ways.   Today, every kid over 3 is a ''rapper", and is famous for five minutes on Youtube.   Nevertheless, I'm grateful for Youtube, as we can dive back into history and find the music of our youth.
Crooners like Frank Sinatra, Perry Como.
Then, there's the great Jane Froman, with a unique voice that haunts.
