Channel 9 crew on kidnap charges on Lebanon
« on: April 13, 2016, 07:40:56 AM »
So who wants to make a comment on the rights and wrongs of this case? The mother says the father 'stole' their children by taking them on holiday to Lebanon and not returning them. The father says the children are Lebanese, were brought up in Lebanon and had gone to Australia on holiday with their mother and *she* stole them by not returning them.

In the middle are the people hired by the mother to 'kidnap' them and bring them back to Australia in an operation that went badly wrong leaving the mother, the 'kidnappers', a Channel 9 film crew and presenter Tara Brown facing charges that could see them held in prison for *years*.

In my opinion it's all bizarre.

Bizarre...but it is what it is...and we have what we have;

TARA Brown and a 60 Minutes crew could face up to 20 years in a Lebanese jail after facing charges over a botched child recovery mission in the capital Beirut.

At the end, when asked if they were getting out, one of the Channel 9 crew members sombrely said “I wish”.
A full court hearing is expected tomorrow. Brown, wearing a salmon coloured blouse was brought before the court in handcuffs and held by a female military guard shortly after 1.30pm local time.
“It’s fine thankyou,” she told News Corp Australia when asked how she was coping.
Brown and one of her crew were then handcuffed together and led away by uniformed officers shortly before 2.30pm.

Earlier, Ms Faulkner, wearing an urban military style shirt and thongs, was brought in. She looked distressed and began crying in the corridor outside the judges, particularly when she realised her estranged husband was also standing in the corridor just three metres away.

The alleged rescue attempt;

The bitter feud between operators within the child rescue industry

IN the child rescue game, there are two rules: Don’t do anything stupid and don’t embarrass the industry.
In a busy street in Lebanon on Thursday morning, one of the industry’s biggest players appears to have broken both rules. At least, that’s what his competitor will tell you.
“Do they think they are the SAS taking Bin Laden off the street? It was bizarre,” Col Chapman told news.com.au, referring to a failed sting by his main rival.

On the surface it does seem like it was an amateurish operation.

On the surface it does seem like it was an amateurish operation.

Things seem to be going from bad to worse with all sorts of details emerging that are turning the 'amateurish' operation into farce! For example... there are claims the father had the passwords to the mothers email account and was well aware of the plans that were being made to 'rescue' the children well in advance of the attempt being made!!

On a more serious note, the father's intransigence in the face of requests by the mother for access to their children has stymied attempts to resolve the matter quickly. In fact it seems it's only the judge in the case who *trying* to find an exit strategy acceptable to everyone... and getting nowhere.

The father is refusing access on the basis that his ex-wife may attempt to do exactly what *he* has done, i.e. take the children from the country and refuse to let them leave again. However it must be said that she at least was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and allow him to take the kids out of Australia on trust. In retrospect this wasn't a good move as events would suggest he is unreliable.

On any level tho it's a sad, sad situation. One the face of it, it's not currently affecting the children much, and the one who is be suffering the most is the mother who may well have lost any chance to spend time with her children for many years to come, if not forever.

Well it seems the saga is over for most. Whilst the guys who actually did the 'hands on' attempt to recover the children are still in prison, everyone else is free (so far). In exchange for her freedom and the dropping of all charges, the mother has been forced to relinquish all claims to custody of her children and they will remain in Lebanon with their father. Channel Nine seems to have paid around $500,000 to the father in compensation, which will set him and the kids up for life.

I suppose conspiracy theorists might wonder if this was all one big setup... but I doubt it. On the face of it with the kidnappers still inside facing long prison terms if found guilty!

Sad for the children I suppose. The mother is allowed to visit them, but only in Lebanon and only under supervision. Not a great result but at least the kids will have a stable life now.
