There are an insane number of requests to join that appear to be 100% SPAM so I changed the 'News' to a request that all applications must come through me... hopefully this would weed out anyone not serious about the forum :)

So the site is back... thanks (sort of) to Jumba. Where did it go?? I updated the software and it crashed. I investigated and was told the server was using an old version of PHP (5.3) and we needed to update to Version 7.0. Why this wasn't done before s anyone's guess.

What price the quarter acre block?
« on: May 17, 2016, 08:36:06 AM »
It's been virtually unobtainable for many years, but the Aussie dream of a small house on a 'quarter acre block' has, around Sydney at least, faded from history into almost the realms of myth. The notion was always that the block would be of sufficient size for families to be able to grow their own small crops to supplement their diet with home grown produce.

Times have changed however. the advent of TV and more passive social structures such as the internet, have eroded the free time people have to spend on veggie patches. Alongside that the average standard of living has risen and people simply don't feel the need to grow food for themselves even tho the health benefits are clear.

This isn't just the result of economic changes but in the demographic structure of our post-industrial population. In the main people no longer want the urban lifestyle and are intent on following the 'cafe culture' and living in the massive agglomerations that are our cities. Of course, whilst *town* planners have paid lip service to the human need for open space the *property* developers are desperately trying to make as high a profit as possible by cramming people into ever smaller spaces.

One result of this is a development proposal for the area around Waterloo that has Mayor Clover Moore in a tizzy. She claims that if this development is built the result will be a population density in that area of Sydney greater than most other cities on earth including the 'megatropolis' cities such as New York and London! Figures being bandied about are 22,000 per square kilometre!! We've lived in London and the population levels there are horrendous. The thought of Sydney becoming so overpopulated in such a land rich country is dreadful.

People will buy the units of course because they are 'convenient' but how many of them will lead happy contented lives in them is open to serious question. We're a social species but there are limits to how close we want to be to others over the long period and I worry about the potential breakdown of law and order when people are crammed into 'ratrun developments' such as these.
